Terrain orientation: compass, map and markings

For weekend hikes in the Bucegi or Piatra Craiului mountains, the classic compass and physical map remain essential tools. GPS signal often disappears in narrow valleys or under rock walls, so learn to read contour lines and follow the red, blue or yellow stripe. Each color has a precise meaning, and the markings on trees and rocks are the only permanent signposts. Respect the rules of conduct when encountering wildlife – announce your presence, do not run and keep your distance. The mountain is conquered with your head, not with speed.
